d47 MUSEUMにて2013年に開催しました「NIPPONの47人 2013 CRAFT」展が、ブラジル サンパウロに引き続き、アメリカ ロスアンジェルスのJAPAN HOUSEにて巡回展として開催されます。

日本の47人の手から生まれる、クラフトの今とその土地らしさ
D&DEPARTMENT PROJECTは「ロングライフデザイン」をテーマに、地域の「個性」と「息の長いその土地らしいデザイン」を見直し、紹介する活動を行っています。日本ではその「ロングライフデザイン」というテーマを47都道府県と言う日本の行政区画に重ねた、食堂、ショップ、ミュージアムとして運営しています。
2012年に開館した物産ミュージアム「d47 MUSEUM」では、「旅」「物産」「地域問題」「食文化」など毎回様々なテーマで、日本の行政区画である47都道府県のそれぞれの個性を47の常設展示台を使い紹介してきました。
今回の展示では、若々しい感性を持つクラフト作家を47都道府県から1人ずつ選び、彼らの作品を紹介します。その土地の歴史風土を背景に持ちながら、自身の創造性と社会の需要をバランス良くミックスし、器や道具に形を変えて自分を表現していきます。一見すると「その土地らしさ」とはかけ離れているように見えるかもしれません。しかし、それぞれの土地で日々を暮らしながら制作する彼らには、生まれ育った故郷の記憶が創作の原点になっていたり、その土地に昔から、あたり前のものとしてある素材や技術を受け継ぐ環境であったり、今そこにいる理由があります。
47人の作品を通して見えてくる、日本各地の豊かな個性と日本のクラフトの今を感じて下さい。

【展覧会に寄せて】
This exhibition, JAPAN 47 ARTISANS, is a remarkable opportunity for visitors to experience Japan through enduring craft traditions from each of the nation’s 47 prefectures.
For some, this may be the first introduction to the prefectural mosaic of Japan?each prefecture with its own histories, resources, and relationships to its environment. While the objects within the exhibition communicate a sense of what makes each prefecture and representative artisan unique, the collection of works exemplifies a shared respect for design and beauty that Japanese craft has carried for centuries, continuously balancing tradition and innovation.
Part of the ever-evolving practice of contemporary craft, the 47 young artisans represented here are not abandoning traditional materials and techniques, rather they are incorporating these conventions with the needs of the present. The works in this exhibition have their origins in practices passed down through generations in Japan. It is our hope that admiration for these foundations increases as visitors recognize the innovative designs and techniques the artisans employ in bringing their works into a contemporary lifestyle.
Craft has long been the pathway for the appreciation of art and creativity in the Japanese home. As part of the Japanese aesthetic, beautiful objects with inherent functionality accrue value and reverence through a life of continued use. D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT, the curators of this exhibition, have based their practice of showcasing the craft, products, customs, and identities of Japan’s 47 prefectures on the idea of Long-Life Design, which is rooted in this respect for consistent use and tradition.
Designs that evolve from and fit the needs of a specific region, while standing the test of time, carry a high degree of sustainability, both ecologically and culturally. Ecologically, these objects are used for generations and the practices are developed through local resources that are thoughtfully managed and conserved. Culturally, they come to define what is important to the region, they keep the culture active, and they become lasting representations of the prefecture’s way of life.
The craftworks presented in this exhibition represent the continuation of time-honored mediums and techniques and stand as testaments to the perpetual charm and diversity of Japanese prefectural designs and customs. In today’s rapidly changing world, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles recognizes that sharing this work is important to sustaining these traditions and offers a reminder that incorporating long-held practices of our communities into our lives adds fundamental strength and meaning.
